Well it is New Years Day! The start of a brand new decade. Reflecting back I can easily say that the last ten years have been the most life transforming years so far. I completed my Masters Degree (2000), got married (2001), got my amazing job that I still have today (2002), got our doggy (2004), had my first diva (2005), and had my second diva (2007). Wow I would say I have accomplished a lot. And even though those are all wonderful things that I am truly proud of I must not forget what else has happened in the last decade that I feel has changed who I am and how I function in life:
1. Acquired outrageous student loan debt.
2. Acquired a mortgage.
3. Acquired a minivan...never thought I would but I did.
4. Acquired a home improvement loan.
5. Acquired some credit card debt
6. And last but not least acquired about 40 or so extra pounds.
Up until now I never really thought about the above. Maybe because I was totally exhausted from my children being anti-sleep and still having to function at a 40 hour a week job. Or maybe it was just denial.
Let me first focus on 1-5. My husband and I never really took the time to look at where we are financially. We both make pretty good salaries and never had any issues with paying bills or buying necessities. However, about a month ago my husband's colleague told him about a book that change his financial life. So we looked into it and bought it. Well what a slap of reality we were given after reading The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. This book is AMAZING. I could not put it down. I would consider my husband and I pretty smart people but man when it comes to paying down debt and budgeting, saving, and investing money I was shocked by how stupid we really were. This book has changed my whole mindset on money and my husband and I are totally dedicated to following this plan to eliminate all of our debt and build wealth. I wish we could of stumbled on this information 10-15 years ago. But it just so happened this book came across our laps now and at this time of year. Perfect for our first life resolution as a married couple! I will be sharing with all of you are progress and the challenges we face as strive for financial fitness.
Ok now lets talk about the 40 pounds. Well not much to say except that I eat like crap and don't work out. I can't blame the divas anymore since my youngest is already 2 years old. But this is a big year for me. My husband and I are going to prom!! haha no I am not 18. He is the senior class advisor at the high school he works at and gets to bring me as his prom date. Plus we are going to disney this year (we planned this trip before our financial enlightment).
And even without all of that I am sick of being fat! I am sick of not being comfortable in jeans. I am sick of my pants rolling over my stomach because the fat pushes it down. I am sick of not having the energy. I am sick of everything that comes along with being 40 pounds overweight! So let me put it out there for you.
I am 5ft 3in and I weigh 175 pounds!! There I said it! My goal is 135 by June 1st! And I am going to do it the old fashion way. Eat healthy, work out, and change my unhealthy habits one at a time. And like my financial fitness I look forward to sharing with all of you my progress to physically fitness.
So there you go. These are my two major goals as I enter into 2010. By succeeding in both of these goals I know that I will be able work it like I have never worked it before!
I would like to know if any of you have ever used the The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey? And if so what were your experiences? And if you have succeed in your weight loss goals what advice or inspirational stories do you have? I hope to learn from you as much as you learn from me.

Hi there…visiting from SITS! Wanted to just say hi. I too am looking at getting in some skinny jeans. I am 5’3″ also and want to take off 20. I can’t seem to get below the 145 mark so I will be happy with that. Check out The Recipe Girl, she has a “Get Healthy in 2010. I joined and am excited to have girls that will be working on the same goals. Hopefully that will help me stick to it. Check out my sight. I am a new follower for you, would love to have you follow me. Take care!

I think those are awesome goals. I am so glad you read that book! I know it has changed many peoples’ lives. I need to lose some weight too. I’m about your height and I’d love to be around 135 or less. We can do it this year!

Thanks for the earlier comment. I too love Dave Ramsey’s book; however, we found that we had to compromise as it was a bit too “starvation diet” for us. We did pay off our smallest debts first and we use the calculators at dinkytown.com to track our progress. We also took on additional jobs and put the income from those jobs directly toward our debts (also had huge student loans!) but we stuck to our regular budgets for most other things. Thus far, it’s definitely paid off for us. Good luck with your journey! I’ll track yours as you track mine…it will be fun
