Yesterday hubby and I were going over and talking about our finances. We did great this week with not spending money on stupid crap. Not like last week. And we also reached our first milestone of putting $1000 into an emergency fund. Now that was with the help of our tax return but who cares it is still there. Also, I am happy to report that we sent $1500 to pay off our credit card. We still have a consolidation, home equity, and car loan on the table. But all in due time. It feels good to have at least one accomplishment. Well actually two.
So as we told our money where to go and talked more about our finances I started to envision a debt free life. And to me it looked good. So then hubby and I started to talk about what a debt free life would look like for our family.
Let me just back up a second though. During that conversation we also talked about why we even wanted to become debt free. We both have really great jobs that are family friendly and pay really well. We have never struggled to pay bills, food, or provide for our children. We have always had some "play" money but not a huge amount. But enough were we never felt deprived. Honestly, I felt we were just living the life of middle America. We had the "normal" bills that everyone else had.
So why would we want to go debt free?
Because, right now in this moment in time, if one of us lost our jobs we would be totally screwed! We have created a life way to dependent on our two incomes. That needs to change.
Now let me tell you now what a debt free life looks like for hubby and I:
- An emergency fund of at least $18,000. I feel this is really important because hubby and I have been blindsided many times by emergencies that we were not prepared for. For example, last summer we had bats in our house and ended up having to get an exterminator that cost us $1600 we did not have. And of course there is always the car maintenance and anything else life threw our way last year and will continue to throw our way. I want to be prepared. Because guess what? Emergencies are going to happen that is something we can count on.
- Our checking account always having money to draw from. We are thinking at least $5000 in there at all time. So if we need stuff like a new lawn mower, snow blower, bed for the girls, clothes, etc we are not sitting there empty handed because we have no money to purchase it. We don't live a frivolous life and don't plan on doing so anytime soon or ever but it would be nice to have the actual cash for when we do need or want to purchase something.
- Being able to fully fund our girls college educations with cash. This is a huge one for us. Our kids WILL NOT take out student loans. Student loans are evil and I plan on in later posts telling you why I think so. And why I think NO ONE should ever take out students loans.
- Not being chained to our jobs. As I have said both of us have great jobs that we went to school for and work really hard to get. But...we would like the option to leave them should either of us want to. Or if one of us lost our jobs we don't want that sending us into a financial crisis.
I am sure I could go on as I think more about it. But these are the four main reasons for us going debt free. I will talk more about all of them in later posts.
Now your turn! What would living a debt free life look like for your family? And if you are already then tell us about it. I love to be inspired!!

I love love love the idea of living debt free!!! I think that would be totally awesome! Great job at all the stuff you are paying off and saving for:) My husband and I have decided before we start trying for a family and when we got married to go debt free and we are slowly but surely getting there. We have the cars paid, the home equity paid off, and just my one student loan left, (which I am diligently working on). It is a little difficult though because when I say “home” I mean our lakehouse in NJ. We rent an apt in the top portion of a house shared with his parents, so that rent payment will always be there…at least until/if we ever move to the lakehouse fulltime. I love talking finances!!

Ah, the be debt free. I fear that is very, very far in the future for us. My husband’s school loans are the size of most people’s mortgages. Sigh.
That said, we are doing what we can to be smart, pay things down and work with an eye on the prize.
Happy FF! I’m your newest follower!

@molly I know how you feel that is how our student loans are. But there is hope and a light at the end of the tunnel. Just keep plugging away. That is what we are doing.

I enjoyed your Post. Fortunately for us our home is paid off. I am a SAHM and my husband is a Union Laborer making great money. We have minimal bills and haven’t been affected by the recession. We have friends who live pay check to pay check, have utilities turned off, etc. It’s those people remind us that it too can happen to us.
I clip coupons, shop at Thrift Stores and Yard Sales. My theory is to save as much as possible for the future because you never know what tomorrow will bring. You have a great “game plan” best of luck.
Happy Saturday Sharefest!

@jen that is so awesome!! If hubby and I follow our plan we should be totally debt free in 10 years and that is including student loans and mortgage. I can not wait for that day. Thanks so much for sharing your situation that was very inspiring to me. I am off to check out your blog.

Good for you! We are on that same journey as well. We were at that place one time not many years ago it IS possible. I appaul your efforts. It would say your biggest hurdle is staying true to your goal. I know too many who say they are on the road to debt free, then give up in a month or two because it was “too hard”. YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!

p.s I have have two days left of my giveaway too. I don’t do many giveaways (they make me nuts) but this is a good one for a great kids book. See ya soon! http://franticmommy.blogspot.com/

@franticmommy you are hilarious!! Yes I agree the hardest part about goal setting is sticking to the goals. keeping our “eye on the prize”. Blogging about it has helped because I see it in black and white every time I pull up my site. Thanks for stopping by!

Debt Free! Ah. I love the ring of it. I live a debt free life and it’s wonderful. My spouse and I have a pay as you go and even a rethink do you need policy. I so admire your quest to be debt free. Having motivation is great and congrats on getting money put in your emergency fund!

Happy SITS Saturday!
I’m 31 WAHM and my family’s been debt free for 2 years. No college debt, 2 cars paid off, house paid off, emergency fund the works.
It is absolutely the most freeing experience. The boys (2 of them) are able to be involved in extra activities without stress on the finances. I’ve taken up guitar lessons and aerial silks all with our budgeted “family fun” money. My husband and I travel with our alloted “travel money” and pay cash for the trips. Stress free!
But it also keeps me humble. We thought about moving from our house because we wanted a little more room, but when we tallied up what that would mean to our debt-free life, it wasn’t worth the cost. I wish my mommy-mobile was a little more swank, but a new car = new debt and since mine is running fine (minus a little squeek every now and then) it’s worth keeping to stay debt free.
Press on and stay focused. It’s a worthy journey.

You rock girl! I am so proud of you and your family. We make sacrifices but it is so good in the end. I will most likely go back to work some day to help with the education of the kids. I too do not want them to have to take out student loans…too easy to get in debt at such a young age. We pay our credit card off in full every month (we only use for online shopping) so it never is too much. We are pretty frugal (you have to be) to not be in debt! Good for you girl!

I just sort of sighed at this. We’d love to get there, but we have such a way to go. At this point, so that we don’t go any deeper into the hole, we don’t use credit cards for anything.

Good for you! We’ve been trying to pay cash or stick with one credit card…seems to be working!

OMG I don’t even want to think about what hubby and I would have to do to get debt free. Between two mortgages because I had to have the big house in the country, endless credit card debt, and loans, we are screwed.
I need a cocktail now.
