Let Me Take A Few Steps Back Because I Still Have A Lot Of Debt To Get Paid Off

by This Mama Works It! on April 16, 2010

The last couple weeks I have been talking nonstop about starting a business. And how quickly I forget, and of course then get totally sidetracked, when it comes to paying off my large looming debt. debt

You can read a little about my debt here. But stay tuned because I plan on getting completely FINANCIALLY NAKED for all of you very soon. That's right I am going to let it all hang out so you can see just how in debt I am and what I am going to do to get out of it. I am thinking it should be pretty entertaining.

See this is the thing until my debt is payed off or pretty damn close to be being payed off I cannot do anything else. So even though I will keep the dream alive of someday starting my business I need to take a couple steps back and refocus on paying off my debt.

Now, like many of you know who have been following me , I already have a pretty well paying  job that I love. However, in order to accelerate paying off debt I need to make more money. I don't need to make millions overnight (would be nice) but I do need to find ways to drastically cut my expenses and make extra money.

But here is the catch...

The only extra time I have to do anything is during my one hour lunch break and maybe a couple hours after the kids go to bed and a few hours on the weekends. Like most moms my time is very limited.

The one thing I do now for extra money is sell on eBay. Which I love to do and equally love sharing all my selling on eBay tips with you. However, that takes up a lot of time and like I said this mama is very short on time. I list items when I can but I need other forms of revenue.

So I am now on a quest. A quest to find quality ways to earn extra money online as well as ways to save and cut expenses. As I wrote about last week it is very hard to find quality information on the internet about making money online.

But I promise when I do find quality ways of making money I will share how much money I actually make and how you can do it too. Because I know how frustrating it can be to constantly  find yourself going around in circles with more questions than answers.

What are your thoughts with making money online? What questions do you have? Hopefully in my quest I can find the answers to a lot of our questions.

Errr … as much as I like your blog, I don’t know that I know you well enough to see you naked. :) Just kidding … was that creepy?

What about monetizing your blog? You seem to be gaining followers every day, if it’s something you’re doing anyway you might as well make some money out of it, right?

Also, not sure this helps because it won’t make you a ton of money overnight, but I joined a survey panel online – it’s called Surveyhead – and I’ve made about $75 so far. Some surveys take longer than others but it’s not as big a time investment as eBay. I think eBay is still the way to go for me, but I have to find higher margin items to sell!

Anyway, I look forward to seeing what you learn on your quest!

I wish I could figure out how to pay off the debt & just write :) I think linking ebay store here would be a good start to figuring out how to make money even when you aren’t on your break. Maybe there is another similar way to link to something that you’d sell? Not sure what that would be exactly.

Ahh… monetizing the blog, what we’re all chasing like a modern day gold-rush ;-) Right now, I’m thinking sponsorship is the way to go for higher dollar amounts vs. selling multiple individual ads. Although, finding a sponsor or two requires building a great network of corporate contacts and investing the time to cultivate your traffic and community to build a demo that’s attractive to the sponsors you’re trying to woo. (Which you seem to be doing well at building!)

It’s always most difficult for me to save money when I’m surrounded by consumption or my shopaholic friends, so I try to avoid the stores and those friends during periods when I’m working hard at it. I once had someone tell me that you can tell a lot about someone based on what they spent their money on – that it tells you what they value in their life. I *try* to remind myself of this when I’m feeling the urge to splurge: will the item help me to meet my financial goals? Does it reflect my values? This mantra works about 90% of the time for me – though somehow not in a cupcake shop. Never there! I guess I value a sweet life. ;-)

I go thru ebay stages. Sometimes I am very diligent about looking for things we no longer use and listing them and then other times I do not do a thing for months and months…

Best wishes to you in your selling adventures : ).

I am visiting via Jill’s Scary Mommy blog this morning. So nice to meet you.

I would love to talk to you about your Ebay store. I have been unemployed since last year and as you know in this economy it is hard to find a job. I am doing a few jobs {mostly out of volunteer} to hopefully obtain the skills I need in order to get that job I want HOWEVER in the meantime I need to start bringing in some money. I really love your ideas and am thinking about doing something similar. I don’t work however my time is limited…so I am thinking this would be something that I could hopefully manage easily from home in the odd hours that I have *free* time!

This is such a hard economy but I think staying with the eBay thing since you know it works for you may be a good idea!

It’s sooo hard to make money online. I always feel like every good opportunity is going to end up being a scam. I can’t wait to here what you find. While I focus on my business I would also like some extra income!

And thank you so much for visiting me on my SITS day!

We are about half way to debt free. I have found the combination of making a bit more money as well as managing the money we have has made a huge difference in our lives. Equally, it’s the big things as well as the small things we do on a daily basis that has made all the difference. We don’t consider it a budget so much as a lifestyle change. I’ve started to post a bit about it and will share more tips as I find the time to write them down. :)
