Sell Now Or Save Clothing For Little Sister?

by This Mama Works It! on July 22, 2010

Every season I go through the same dilemma. Should I sell all of my oldest daughter's clothing now or save for her little sister. Or should I sell some and keep some? Really every season I am standing here scratching my head and end up procrastinating because I am not sure what to do.

One of the major ways I am able to purchase name brand clothing for my girls is that I am able to make money back on their pre-loved stuff every season. If I don't sell the outfit then that just means less money I have to spend or more money I have to use out of our bank account. Which hubby would not be too happy about.

My girls are 2 1/2 years apart. I have plenty of sizes 2t to sell off but it is the sizes 5 and 6 that I am debating about. I buy cute stuff!

Part of me wants to save it but then that means I have to store it for 2 1/2 years or more before my youngest can wear it. This then means when I am ready to sell the clothes the lines will be 4+ years old and most likely will not get a lot of money back.

This is what I am completating today.  What are your thoughts? I am going to make my decision by tomorrow. Because it is back to school selling time so I need to make this decision quick.

I keep all of it. And, I’m glad. My girls are two years apart, and my second is much bigger than my first and they are going from one closet directly to the other. Does that help? Probably not. But, by the time you sell it and everything, would you be able to buy as much with that money?

I would say pick a few that you don’t think you would use the second time around, and sell them, but set your faves aside to save. I have learned to save them, and although selling them sounds like a great way to make some cash, I’ve always ended up passing our baby items that were no longer needed to someone who DOES need them! I’d rather gift them to someone who will love and appreciate them, than sell them. That’s just me, though. To each their own! :)

Best of luck in making your final decision!

Honestly, I think styles will have changed quite a bit by then. I would keep the basics (stuff that never goes out of style) like shorts, black pants, basic tops. Sell the rest and put the money aside for school shopping etc. Just my 2 cents!

Well, this dilemma is exactly why I launched my Kids Clothing Swap business (http://gumdropswap.com). Even if you save for a younger child, there is no guarantee that size will be the appropriate fit or season when the younger child reaches that age. With Gumdrop Swap, there can be a constant flow of stylish clothes that always fit!

Hi- visiting from the LBS tea party.
This is an interesting debate. I save all my clothes, expect if its stained or ruined, which tends to be more than I’d like. I have 2 girls. I also have a younger niece. I am sure it saves money to not have to spend money to outfir my youngest. And between bdays, Christmas and grandmother splurges she always has some new outfits.

I’ve been keeping it and giving some away (we were blessed with so much and I wanted to return the kindness). I’ve recently found a resale store and have sold some there but they are really, really picky.
(consignment – i couldn’t think of the word)

stopped by from lady bloggers and looking fwd to reading more on selling and buying on ebay.
